Friendship, Providence, and Burden

The Fellowship of the Ring

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
MYTH 102 | 3 credits | 12 weeks | Classic book-club rhythm

Course Description

Friendship, Providence, and Burden is based on the book, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, by legendary writer, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Our second course on Tolkien begins with the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The One Ring has been found and the world will never be the same. As nine unlikely companions set out from Rivendell, we watch friendship become a means of grace, providence weave invisible threads, and the smallest choices change the fate of ages.

We’re told this is a Christian story, but what if moviemakers intentionally removed every reference to God and His Creation? Reading Tolkien’s most beloved work together in a book club format reveals what Hollywood tried to erase, we’ll discover how they are a source of strength and courage.
